Hack n Slash fans rejoice, Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3D is set to help launch with the Nintendo 3DS on March 27th. This 4 character sword swinging button crusher from KOEI is sure to please those action junkies that will be getting their hands on Nintendo’s new 3D platform. - Pre-Order on Amazon

Samurai Team Gameplay

Players will have the ability to control 4 characters simultaneously on the battlefield with one ‘lead character’ pushing the action. Your lead character will be a unique character of your creation. In a game of multiple characters players who can properly utilize each of their 4 team members unique skill sets will be victorious. KOEI has made switching between these characters a breeze using the 3DS touch screen controls. With one touch you can switch between your team members while in battle.

There have been some new reviews that say keeping up with the character changes can get a bit confusing as your team members spread all over the map unlocking new objectives. This seems to give the game that frantic pace Samurai Warrior players expect, yet for some it may be too much.

Samurai Combat

Like we said above all of your characters have special skills and these are called Battle Skills. Included are things like group buffs, temporary invincibility, and moral crushing attacks on your enemy. Speaking of moral, Samurai Warriors uses this game mechanic to give your enemies buffs and de-buffs in battle. When the moral is high zones on the battle map will become power zones where enemies will be much more powerful. As you kill of your enemies and achieve mission objectives you can decrease the moral and take away these power zones, as well as other buffs and de-buffs.

Live Your Samurai Story

Samurai Warriors Chronicles allows gamers to build the life and story of their own unique samurai character. In the new revamped Story Mode you progress through the deep lore of Samurai legends. The games story mode seems to be pretty deep as your character progress through Japans war torn lands and seek out 40 Samurai legends along your journey. Like a good RPG these characters that you meet along the way can unlock other unique events and challenges for your character to take on. It seems the game mechanic plays out a little like a Bioware rpg where you will need to build trust by or what KOEI calls “Friendship Level” in order to unlock these events.

Just like any good action rpg you have a thorough leveling or Growth System in play within Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3DS. Increase your skills, collect new weapons, and learn new battle skills.

Online Play

Online content seems to be limited to the Nintendo 3DS street pass functionality. It allows you to pit your 4 character team against other 3DS player teams in ‘simulated battles’, this sounds like its nothing more than a dice roll, but at least it tells you where your characters stand in the grand scheme of worldwide 3D samurais. You will also be able to trade items and weapons with other characters through street pass but it does not look like there is any direct multiplayer functionality. I would think that a good hack n slash would have some sort of true online multiplayer content, so this is a bit of a disappointment.

How does it look?
Fans of the franchise know that this game is all about being overwhelmed by the vast battlefield and hordes of enemies. While Samurai Warriors Chronicles has made some improvements to the game play in this console port its seems the smaller 3ds screen size has limited its scope. The early reviews have not been too impressed with the portable’s ability to recreate the havoc of its console counterpart. Do to this shrunken down battle field you don’t get that ‘holy crap’ feel that you may get on the console versions with massive amounts of enemy forces.

Yet even while limiting the scope of the games environment its been noted that the 3D effect on this title is really something. We keep hearing the same thing about many of the 3DS games, that the effect adds a really cool depth to the landscape that feels like you are looking into a 3D world and not so much having that 3D world pop out at you.

There are a lot of the familiar gameplay mechanics present in the 3DS release of Samurai Warriors with a few tweaks here and there and it seems that fans of this long standing franchise will not be disappointed. Yet it doesn’t look like this will be one of the powerhouse titles of the 3DS launch for those uninitiated button mashers. If you want to get your samurai on be sure to add this title to your Nintendo 3DS order package. Also don’t forget about Amazon’s current 3DS $10 game discount – you can check that out here.
