Super Street Fighter 4 3ds preview

Street fighter has long been one of the franchises that commands a high level of respect. In fact, trying to find a gamer that hasn’t heard of Street Fighter is nearly impossible, especially considering all of the gamers these days grew up playing Street Fighter II. Most gamers are aware of the fact that Capcom has been trying to resurrect the franchise – mostly with good results. The 3DS is a system perfect for these games, and Super Street Fighter IV 3DS is nearly upon us. What makes it great is the fact that it brings some of the things that we’re used to in the franchise, as well as some nice new things that keeps the franchise relevant. - You can pre-order on Amazon Here

It’s All about Combos

Street Fighter burst on the scene and became popular because of the combo system. Even to this day, there aren’t many games that can honestly say that they have as complex of a combination system as Street Fighter. While the 3D is something certainly worth cheering about, it’s nice to know that Capcom hasn’t alienated their fan base. Allowing the gamer to use both the D-Pad or touch screen circle pad was a nice choice, as being able to break off those coveted ultra-combos is tough, and having a choice was simply a fantastic way for them to go. These button controls are completely customizable as well and can be arranged in a Lite and Pro configuration.

When playing the Lite configuration the game assigns complete combos to specific buttons making the classic three hit Street Fighter combos and awesome specials a cinch to pull off. Yet the true Street Fighter purist will want to play in Pro mode which is the way any true fighting game vet will want it. In pro mode you must pull of the combos manually using the traditional systematic button presses.

The Look

If you’re going to talk about this game, you’ll definitely have to speak on the 3D. It’s a nice touch and it’s easy to tell that they spent a fair amount of time on it. But, what really catches the eye is the Dynamic View system. Instead of just having characters on a flat plane, Capcom actually has the camera swing around for an over-the-shoulder view, adding some much needed depth to the mix. Of course, this may not sit over too well with the Street Fighter traditionalists, but it’s assuredly a complimentary touch. Some reviewers have said this view is a nice and impressive effect but honestly you will want to play the game in classic mode to really enjoy the game.

If your worried about how this version of Super Street Fighter IV compares to the original console version all signs point to the 3DS engine really handling the game well. That is when talking about the character models, the textures and environment is where CAPCOM seems to have let the visuals slide a bit. To be honest if sacrifices needed to be made to convert to the handheld version I would obviously rather take away from the backgrounds and focus more on the characters.

Online Multi-player

One of the strong points of SSF4 has to be its online mode where you can battle against other Street Fighter vets from around the globe. The Nintendo 3DS version does not disappoint us here. There have been some concerns with the servers connectivity while in multiplayer mode but it seems finding opponents will not be a problem. Street Fighter 20 years ago was the ultimate 1 v 1 arcade experience and online gaming allows us to bring that competitive arcade experience worldwide.
